The Building Blocks of Parenting with Cancer Location: Zoom

Almost 3 million children and adolescents have a parent who has or has had cancer. Parenting with cancer can present unique challenges and stressors for families. This presentation has the following objectives:

  • Develop a better understanding of the importance of parental self-care and learn new coping tools
  • Learn strategies for how to talk to kids about a cancer diagnosis
  • Discuss ways to assess coping and adjustment in your children
  • Learn about other resources and organizations that support children and families with a cancer diagnosis

Presenter:

Sam North, MA, LPC (she/her) is a Pediatric Psychology Track intern at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. She is currently completing her work at American Family Children’s Hospital and Carbone Cancer Center. Sam works part time as a group facilitator at Gilda’s Club. Sam is a doctoral candidate in the clinical psychology program at the University of Denver. She completed her Master of Arts degree in International Disaster Psychology at the University of Denver. Clinically, she has special interests in trauma-informed and culturally responsive services in the areas of oncology, pediatric oncology, chronic health conditions, end of life, and grief.
