Tai Chi Time 9:00 AM Location ZOOM

A short (14 minute) practice to breathe, move start your day off.

Baduanjin (Eight Pieces of Brocade or Eight Skilken Movements) is one of the most common forms of Tai Chi exercise that serves to improve human health. A complete Baduanjin includes eight separate exercises, each addressing a different physical area and qi meridian. In traditional Chinese Medicine, meridians support the flow of qi and other fundamental substances in the body.

There are both standing and seated versions of Baduanjin in history, but the standing version is more popular among modern practitioners. Studies show that practicing Baduanjin regularly is beneficial for quality of life, sleep quality, balance, handgrip strength, trunk flexibility, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and resting heart rate.

Zoom access is provided by our Technology Sponsors, the Wisconsin Cancer Collaborative and UW Carbone Cancer Center.

Kid Support (ages 9-12) Time 3:30 PM Location Zoom

Description:

Our weekly youth support groups are moving online! There are three different groups for kids and teens who have a parent or loved-one with cancer:

  • Ages 4-8 (Mondays, 4-5 pm)
  • Ages 9-12 (Wednesdays, 3-4 pm)
  • Ages 13-18 (Mondays, 7-8 pm)

We are keeping the good stuff (professional facilitator, engaging therapeutic art & games, relevant education about cancer and practical tools for coping) while making the groups more accessible to all families living in Wisconsin. Kids and teens will experience the valuable connection to peers who understand what they're going through, which is more important now than ever in our physically distanced world.

How to Participate:

  • Kids and teens will need access to a computer/tablet/smart phone connected to the internet in order to join the group via Zoom. They will also need headphones and a private space in order to maintain as much privacy as possible for all participants.
  • Each week will have a theme and designated materials, most of which can be found around the house. Facilitators will always make adjustments and be flexible to accommodate the "stuck at home" environment in which we're living.
  • You'll need to be a member of Gilda's Club (NO COST, just a simple process) and reside in the state of Wisconsin due to clinical licensure requirements. There will also be a form to complete specific to the Kid Support/Teen Time support group and a short check-in with staff on the phone or via zoom to orient your family to the group.
  • Contact Program Manager Carissa Hodgson to get started:

carissa@gildasclubmadison.org

About the Kid Support Facilitator:

Her work centers around supporting kids and families who are navigating cancer, shaped largely by her father having lung cancer when she was a child and her step-father’s diagnosis of liver cancer when she was a young adult. In her role at Gilda’s Club she is able to work directly with survivors and co-survivors of all ages, as well as develop psychoeducational programs to support the whole family.

Carissa earned her Master of Social Work degree from UW Madison in 2007. She is a Family Therapist and Oncology Social Worker whose work also includes therapy with individuals, groups and families in outpatient, day-treatment, in-home and animal-assisted settings. Areas of interest and practice are child and adolescent development, chronic illness, caregiving, gender identity, sexuality, trauma, grief and loss, and family systems. Carissa is also an Associate Lecturer at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, most recently teaching a graduate course on Grief, Death, Loss and Life.

Carissa has been a member of the Association of Oncology Social Work since 2015 and presently sits as co-chair of the Youth, Families and Cancer Special Interest Group.

Write to Heal Time 9:00 AM Location ZOOM

Description:

Have you or someone you love experienced cancer? Do you sometimes feel overwhelmed with either your own health issues or another person's as their caregiver? Do you believe in the power of story and its healing ability? Narrative medicine can empower people to speak and write their truth. Through the experience of being vulnerable and sharing your own story, you may find a common bond with others.

What You'll Need:

  • Pens, pencils, or whatever writing tool you like
  • Paper/journal
  • Laptop/tablet if you prefer to type

About the Facilitator:

Jamie Steckelberg is a ten-year cancer survivor and Gilda’s Club member. She also was a caregiver for both parents Bob and Elma during their cancer journeys. During chemotherapy while perusing the books at Gilda’s, she encountered a book entitled When Words Heal by Sharon Bray on how to create and facilitate writing groups using the Amherst Writer and Artist method. Within months after chemo had ended, she became an Amherst Writer and Artist facilitator of Write to Heal, a writing group for cancer survivors and caregivers at Gilda’s Club in Middleton, WI. Her daughter Josie has been an integral part of Jamie’s healing not only through shaving her own head but also by painting and pouring mud on her mother’s head. A poet and English Instructor at Madison College, Jamie also enjoys thrifting and creating art with Josie.

Art Journaling Time 2:00 PM Location Virtual - assigned links

Tuesday, January 12, 2021 @ 2pm-3pm CST via Zoom

Description:

In this class we'll explore journaling with art. What does this mean? It can be as simple as documenting each day’s activities with art, doodling feelings, or creating pages that respond to the larger events of your life - cancer, COVID, family or friends, etc. It can be light, deep, sweet, funny, beautiful-the mission is to make a regular, creative practice of sharing and honoring yourself and your life.

We'll start with an exercise as we open up our minds and hearts, and warm up our hands for movement. Next we'll have prompts that you can visually answer with whatever materials you have in your spaces - collage, painting, drawing, stickers, etc.

This is an intentionally welcoming creative space, where there are no wrong answers, and any expression of creativity is wonderful.

What You'll Need:

  • - Bring whatever art materials or medium you have on hand. Paper and pen, paint, markers, or anything else you'd like to use.

About Mallory Shotwell:

Mallory Shotwell is an interdisciplinary artist and arts educator. In her art practice, she works with storytelling/interview, audio, photography, and video to share stories based on a theme. Cooking Class: Tofu Tikka Masala Time 6:00 PM Location Virtual - assigned links

Friday, December 11, 2020 @ 11am CST via Zoom

Description:

Join this online cooking class where Chef Michael Solovey will teach us how to make chili (including vegetarian options). You can follow along and cook during class, or just observe as a lecture.

What You'll Need:

  • - Ingredients & Prep: If you’ll be cooking this dish along with the chef during class: Read through the Recipe Packet (PDF), purchase any ingredients you need, and complete the prep work before class begins.

About Chef Michael Solovey:

Chef Michael Solovey started cooking at a young age under the tutelage of his Mother, a refined, self-taught culinarian. He would later graduate magna cum laude from Le Cordon Bleu at Scottsdale Culinary Institute before moving to Shanghai, China in 2008. Over the course of five years working in the food and beverage industry in Asia, Chef Michael played various roles in opening 24 food and beverage establishments including his very own Eastern European inspired restaurant, Bloc.

In the past seven years, Michael has served as Resident Chef for Sur La Table and Chef/Cooking School Director for The Boelter Companies in Glendale, Wisconsin. He is now the owner of Sage Harvest Cooking School. He has taught over 1,700 classes to over 10,000 students. His pedagogy implements approachable science to help his students understand why different cooking techniques render a variety of results in the kitchen; all for the sake of developing students' culinary instinct. Although Chef Michael personally writes and curates all of the recipes used in his classes, his approach is decidedly anti-recipe as his aim is to empower everyone from the novice foodie to the seasoned industry professional to take confident control of their diet, health, and wellness by cooking amazing food.

This is an intentionally welcoming creative space, where there are no wrong answers, and any expression of creativity is wonderful.

What You'll Need:

  • - Bring whatever art materials or medium you have on hand. Paper and pen, paint, markers, or anything else you'd like to use.

What You'll Need:

Tuesday, February 23, 2021 @ 2pm-3pm CST via Zoom

Cooking Class: Quiche Lorraine Time 6:00 PM Location Virtual - assigned links

Wednesday, February 24, 2021 @ 6pm CST via Zoom

Description:

Join this online cooking class where Chef Michael Solovey will teach us how to make quiche Lorraine.

        Tuesday, March 9, 2021 @ 2pm-3pm CST via Zoom

        Wednesday, March 10, 2021 @ 6pm CST via Zoom

        Description:

Join this online cooking class where Chef Michael Solovey will teach us how to make a Jeweled Quinoa Acorn Squash Bowl.

CUREative Art for Teens: Light from Darkness

Monday, March 22, 2021 @ 7 pm CST via Zoom

        Description:

Join other Gilda's Club teens to reflect on something positive that has come from a negative experience you've had. Was there something you learned or took away from this experience? Together we will discuss light and dark and the balance that comes with it. Begin an artwork that represents this balance. Learn how to make a mandala with drawing materials that brightly pop on a black background to represent light that can come from the darkness.

        What You'll Need:

Any or all of the following:

        • Black or dark paper and any of the following:
        • Metallic sharpies or paint markers
        • Oil pastels
        • Chalk pastels
        • 3-D paint

        About the Teen Time Facilitator:

Molly Linn-Miller has been working as a registered art therapist for 13 years. She provides art therapy and support for both individuals and groups.

She works with a variety of populations and ages including families living with cancer, those recovering from substance abuse, adults with living with autism, memory loss and other mental illness, and pre-school aged children.

Molly also paints large scale children’s murals and makes collages using a variety of traditional and non-traditional materials. In addition to art-making she enjoys spending time with her husband and two boys, cooking and eating food with her girlfriends, hiking and playing ultimate frisbee.

Art Journaling Time 2:00 PM Location Virtual - assigned links

        Tuesday, March 23, 2021 @ 2pm-3pm CDT via Zoom

She majored in English at Aquinas College in Michigan, and later French and Elementary Education at Edgewood College in Madison. She worked as a public school teacher in Michigan and as a Montessori teacher in Madison. In her teaching practice, she utilizes multiple learning styles to serve and respect people's needs.

Cooking Class: Minestrone Soup Time 6:00 PM Location Virtual - assigned links

        Wednesday, March 24, 2021 @ 6pm CDT via Zoom

        Description:

Join this online cooking class where Chef Michael Solovey will teach us how to make Minestrone Soup.
