Beautiful at the Broken Places: Creating Ourselves through Mosaic Time 9:30 AM Location Gilda's Clubhouse Backyard

Saturday, October 2nd from 9:30 - 11:30 am
in the backyard of Gilda's Club (Middleton, WI)

Bring your breaking power with you and prepare to bust some old ceramics to create unique mosaic art pieces. Gilda's Club Art Therapy Intern will lead participants through the breaking and assembling process. We will have all the basic supplies you'll need on hand to make one of several mosaic options. Pre-broken pieces will be available for those who aren't comfortable breaking, including safety-conscious round pieces available for younger children. This activity is appropriate for kids 5 and up. Volunteers will be on hand to supervise kids under 5 who would rather play in the backyard. We will spread tables around the backyard so there will be plenty of space for everyone! Masks are required to keep everyone safe.

About Rene Livingston-DeTienne:

Rene Livingston-DeTienne is a senior in Edgewood’s Art Therapy undergraduate program. She is also a State of WI Certified Peer Specialist (CPS) and CPS Trainer. Raised in the WI/IL Stateline area, in the town of Beloit, she moved to Madison in the early 90s to start a life in the “big city” and has been here ever since – long enough to now consider herself a Madisonian.

A lifelong artist and writer, she has been creating artwork for as long as she can remember. Her favorite medium is water-soluble oil pastels, and much of her oil pastel artwork is abstract, evoking emotion with color and shape and suggestive figures. However, she’s recently discovered a love for realistic water-soluble oil painting as well. In general, she loves exploring different mediums, from pen and ink to watercolors, from mixed media, collage, and sculpture to papermaking. She has also been writing poetry from an early age, and her first chapbook, The Good Truth, was released from Finishing Line Press this year. Her next full length collection, Not Just the Fire, will be due out in late 2022 from Cornerstone Press.

While not busy with school, she enjoys reading, gardening, baking, and other muggle-ish activities. She lives in Madison with her young adult daughter and spouse and their four unruly little dogs.

Tai Chi Time 9:00 AM Location ZOOM

A short (14 minute) practice to breathe, move start your day off.

Baduanjin (Eight Pieces of Brocade or Eight Skilken Movements) is one of the most common forms of Tai Chi exercise that serves to improve human health. A complete Baduanjin includes eight separate exercises, each addressing a different physical area and qi meridian. In traditional Chinese Medicine, meridians support the flow of qi and other fundamental substances in the body.

There are both standing and seated versions of Baduanjin in history, but the standing version is more popular among modern practitioners. Studies show that practicing Baduanjin regularly is beneficial for quality of life, sleep quality, balance, handgrip strength, trunk flexibility, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and resting heart rate.

Cooking Class: Beetroot Borscht (Beet Soup) Time 6:00 PM Location Virtual - assigned links

Tuesday, October 5th 2021 @ 6 pm CDT via Zoom

Description:

Join this online cooking class where Chef Michael Solovey will teach us how to make a delicious beetroot borscht (beet soup). You can follow along and cook during class, or just observe as a lecture.

What You'll Need:

  • - Ingredients & Prep: If you’ll be cooking this dish along with the chef during class: Read through the Recipe Packet (PDF), purchase any ingredients you need, and complete the prep work before class begins.

About Chef Michael Solovey:

Chef Michael Solovey started cooking at a young age under the tutelage of his Mother, a refined, self-taught culinarian. He would later graduate magna cum laude from Le Cordon Bleu at Scottsdale Culinary Institute before moving to Shanghai, China in 2008. Over the course of five years working in the food and beverage industry in Asia, Chef Michael played various roles in opening 24 food and beverage establishments including his very own Eastern European inspired restaurant, Bloc.

In the past seven years, Michael has served as Resident Chef for Sur La Table and Chef/Cooking School Director for The Boelter Companies in Glendale, Wisconsin. He is now the owner of Sage Harvest Cooking School. He has taught over 1,700 classes to over 10,000 students. His pedagogy implements approachable science to help his students understand why different cooking techniques render a variety of results in the kitchen; all for the sake of developing students' culinary instinct. Although Chef Michael personally writes and curates all of the recipes used in his classes, his approach is decidedly anti-recipe as his aim is to empower everyone from the novice foodie to the seasoned industry professional to take confident control of their diet, health, and wellness by cooking amazing food.

Comic Book Drawing - Introduction Time 7:00 PM Location Virtual - assigned links

Thursday, October 7, 2021 @ 7-8:30pm CDT via Zoom

Description:

Each week of this class will allow us to explore various elements of comic books and graphic novels (lettering, panel design, drawing, coloring, etc). We will look at different styles of drawing - whether that is anime, manga, or stylistic choices when an artist or illustrator uses pencil, marker, or even paint. Understanding these styles better, we will then practice them ourselves!

We'll start each session with a fun, easygoing warm up. We will then practice different aspects of comic books, from outlining, sketching in ideas, playing with dialogue boxes, building characters, and developing them so they feel real and relatable.

This week we will focus on an introduction to the topic with plenty of hands opportunities for you to explore comics.

What You'll Need:

  • Pencil, ink pen, and lots of paper (which can be watercolor paper if you'd like to paint it later).

About Mallory Shotwell:

Mallory Shotwell is an interdisciplinary artist and arts educator. In her art practice, she works with storytelling/interview, audio, photography, and video to share stories based on a theme. She majored in English at Aquinas College in Michigan, and later French and Elementary Education at Edgewood College in Madison. She worked as a public school teacher in Michigan and as a Montessori teacher in Madison. In her teaching practice, she utilizes multiple learning styles to serve and respect people's needs.

Within months after chemo had ended, she became an Amherst Writer and Artist facilitator of Write to Heal, a writing group for cancer survivors and caregivers at Gilda’s Club in Middleton, WI. Comic Book Drawing - Telling Your Story Time 7:00 PM Location Virtual - assigned links

Wednesday, October 20, 2021 @ 7-8:30pm CDT via Zoom

Description:

Each week of this class will allow us to explore various elements of comic books and graphic novels (lettering, panel design, drawing, coloring, etc). We will look at different styles of drawing - whether that is anime, manga, or stylistic choices when an artist or illustrator uses pencil, marker, or even paint. Understanding these styles better, we will then practice them ourselves!

We'll start each session with a fun, easygoing warm up. We will then practice different aspects of comic books, from outlining, sketching in ideas, playing with dialogue boxes, building characters, and developing them so they feel real and relatable.

This week we will concentrate on ways to help you tell your story through a comic book format. Note: You can attend this session without having attended the previous introduction session!

Cooking Class: Beef Barley Soup for your Multi-Cooker or Stovetop Time 6:00 PM Location Virtual - assigned links

Thursday, October 21st 2021 @ 6 pm CDT via Zoom

Description:

Join this online cooking class where Chef Michael Solovey will teach us how to make a beef barley soup for your multi-cooker or stovetop.

Write to Heal Time 9:00 AM Location ZOOM

Description:

Have you or someone you love experienced cancer? Do you sometimes feel overwhelmed with either your own health issues or another person's as their caregiver? Do you believe in the power of story and its healing ability? Narrative medicine can empower people to speak and write their truth. Through the experience of being vulnerable and sharing your own story, you may find a common bond with others.

What You'll Need:

  • Pens, pencils, or whatever writing tool you like
  • Paper/journal
  • Laptop/tablet if you prefer to type

About the Facilitator:

Jamie Steckelberg is a ten-year cancer survivor and Gilda’s Club member. She also was a caregiver for both parents Bob and Elma during their cancer journeys. During chemotherapy while perusing the books at Gilda’s, she encountered a book entitled When Words Heal by Sharon Bray on how to create and facilitate writing groups using the Amherst Writer and Artist method. Within months after chemo had ended, she became an Amherst Writer and Artist facilitator of Write to Heal, a writing group for cancer survivors and caregivers at Gilda’s Club in Middleton, WI. Her daughter Josie has been an integral part of Jamie’s healing not only through shaving her own head but also by painting and pouring mud on her mother’s head. A poet and English Instructor at Madison College, Jamie also enjoys thrifting and creating art with Josie.

Cooking Class: Holiday Sides Time 6:00 PM Location Virtual - assigned links

Wednesday, November 24th, 2021 @ 6pm CST via Zoom

Description:

Join this online cooking class where Chef Michael Solovey will teach us how to make some tasty holiday side dishes, including jalapeño cornbread stuffing, berbere roasted cauliflower, and sweet potatoes 2 ways.

Cooking Class: Beef Pho Time 6:00 PM Location Virtual - assigned links

Tuesday, December 21st, 2021 @ 6pm CST via Zoom

Description:

Join this online cooking class where Chef Michael Solovey will teach us how to make Beef Pho (Vietnamese noodle soup).

This program is made possible, in part, by a grant from The McKesson Foundation.
