Description

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A Washington Post Notable Work of Nonfiction • An NPR Best Book of the Year • A Kirkus Reviews Best Book of the Year • A Chicago Review of Books Best Book of the Year • A New York Public Library Best Book of the Year • A Goodreads Choice Awards Finalist

"With narrative elan, Egan gives us a riveting saga of how a predatory con man became one of the most powerful people in 1920s America, Grand Dragon of the Ku Klux Klan, with a plan to rule the country—and how a grisly murder of a woman brought him down. Compelling and chillingly resonant with our own time." —Erik Larson, author of The Splendid and the Vile

“Riveting…Egan is a brilliant researcher and lucid writer.” —Minneapolis Star Tribune

A historical thriller by the Pulitzer and National Book Award-winning author that tells the riveting story of the Klan's rise to power in the 1920s, the cunning con man who drove that rise, and the woman who stopped them.

The Roaring Twenties—the Jazz Age—has been characterized as a time of Gatsby frivolity. But it was also the height of the uniquely American hate group, the Ku Klux Klan. Their domain was not the old Confederacy, but the Heartland and the West. They hated Blacks, Jews, Catholics and immigrants in equal measure, and took radical steps to keep these people from the American promise. And the man who set in motion their takeover of great swaths of America was a charismatic charlatan named D.C. Stephenson.

Stephenson was a magnetic presence whose life story changed with every telling. Within two years of his arrival in Indiana, he’d become the Grand Dragon of the state and the architect of the strategy that brought the group out of the shadows – their message endorsed from the pulpits of local churches, spread at family picnics and town celebrations. Judges, prosecutors, ministers, governors and senators across the country all proudly proclaimed their membership. But at the peak of his influence, it was a seemingly powerless woman – Madge Oberholtzer – who would reveal his secret cruelties, and whose deathbed testimony finally brought the Klan to their knees.

A FEVER IN THE HEARTLAND marries a propulsive drama to a powerful and page-turning reckoning with one of the darkest threads in American history.

Cooking Class: Biscuits, Honey Maple Butter & Gravy Time 11:00 AM Location Virtual - assigned links

Fri, Jan 9 @ 11am Central

via Zoom

Description:

Join this online cooking class where Chef Michael Solovey will teach us how to make some easy homemade biscuits, honey maple butter, and gravy (with vegetarian options). You can follow along and cook during class, or just observe as a lecture.

What You'll Need:

  • - Ingredients & Prep: If you’ll be cooking this dish along with the chef during class: Read through the Recipe Packet (PDF), purchase any ingredients you need, and complete the prep work before class begins.

About Chef Michael Solovey:

Chef Michael Solovey started cooking at a young age under the tutelage of his Mother, a refined, self-taught culinarian. He would later graduate magna cum laude from Le Cordon Bleu at Scottsdale Culinary Institute before moving to Shanghai, China in 2008. Over the course of five years working in the food and beverage industry in Asia, Chef Michael played various roles in opening 24 food and beverage establishments including his very own Eastern European inspired restaurant, Bloc.

In the past seven years, Michael has served as Resident Chef for Sur La Table and Chef/Cooking School Director for The Boelter Companies in Glendale, Wisconsin. He is now the owner of Sage Harvest Cooking School. He has taught over 2,500 classes to over 16,000 students since 2012. His pedagogy implements approachable science to help his students understand why different cooking techniques render a variety of results in the kitchen; all for the sake of developing students' culinary instinct. Although Chef Michael personally writes and curates all of the recipes used in his classes, his approach is decidedly anti-recipe as his aim is to empower everyone from the novice foodie to the seasoned industry professional to take confident control of their diet, health, and wellness by cooking amazing food.

Knitting can decrease stress, increase self-esteem, and improve focus and memory. It is not about performance or perfection. Gilda's Knit Karma Club serves as a welcome opportunity to experience the health benefits of knitting while finding friendship along the way.

All fiber artists are welcome!  Crochet, embroidery, slow stitching, you name it!

Snag a beverage, perhaps a snack and join us.

Bring your own project, or we have yarn, needles and ideas.  All skill levels are welcome.

From our instructor Shari Porte "I began knitting in my 30's. Over the years, I have knitted many sweaters that are a bit oversized, scarves that are a tad too long, and gloves that are fingerless. I am an above average knitter but not a master knitter. Present day, I like to keep it simpler and knit straightforward scarves while I stream. I am looking forward to meeting up with other knitters, marveling at their choices of color and texture, and helping to rescue a dropped stitch or two :-)"

Saturdays, Jan. 24 - Feb. 21
10:00–11:30AM CST | Live on Zoom

Join Manisha Bhargava, Board-Certified Health & Wellness Coach and Certified Radical Remission Instructor, for a powerful 5-week virtual workshop series based on Dr. Kelly A. Turner’s bestselling books Radical Remission and Radical Hope. This workshop dives into 10 lifestyle factors uncovered through Dr. Turner’s extensive research into more than 1,500 cases of unexpected cancer remission.

Each session explores two of these healing factors—such as changing your diet, strengthening intuition, and releasing suppressed emotions—through a dynamic blend of scientific research, survivor stories, and experiential practices that bring the content to life. You’ll walk away with meaningful insights, practical tools, and a personalized action plan to support your physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

The workshop’s interactive format fosters sharing, connection, and community—providing a supportive space to learn and grow alongside others on a healing journey. For many, this becomes the first step in joining a long-term wellness network.

Whether you’re currently facing a health challenge, supporting a loved one, or focused on prevention, this workshop offers safe, empowering strategies to strengthen immune function and enhance overall wellness—relevant for anyone managing or seeking to prevent chronic disease.

Caregivers, family members, and friends are warmly encouraged to attend in support of their loved one’s healing journey.

Encouraging Findings from Harvard!

A groundbreaking study conducted by the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health found that participants in the Radical Remission Workshop experienced significant improvements in quality of life—benefits that lasted for at least six months after completing the program.

Cooking Class: Sweet Potato and Kale Skillet Time 6:00 PM Location Virtual - assigned links

Thurs, Jan 29 @ 6pm Central

via Zoom

Description:

Join this online cooking class where Chef Michael Solovey will teach us how to make a versatile, healthy dish worthy of breakfast, lunch or dinner. He'll include many options for customizing this to your taste.

Cooking Class: Korean Fried Rice (Fermented Foods) Time 11:00 AM Location Virtual - assigned links

Fri, Feb 13 @ 11am Central

via Zoom

Description:

Join this online cooking class where Chef Michael Solovey will teach us about the benefits of fermented foods, including Kimchi, and how to make a delicious and versatile Korean fried rice dish. You can follow along and cook during class, or just observe as a lecture.

What You'll Need:

  • - Ingredients & Prep: We'll add a recipe packet closer to the class date and will email a copy to all registered attendees.

During chemotherapy while perusing the books at Gilda’s, she encountered a book entitled When Words Heal by Sharon Bray on how to create and facilitate writing groups using the Amherst Writer and Artist method. Within months after chemo had ended, she became an Amherst Writer and Artist facilitator of Write to Heal, a writing group for cancer survivors and caregivers at Gilda’s Club in Middleton, WI. Her daughter Josie has been an integral part of Jamie’s healing not only through shaving her own head but also by painting and pouring mud on her mother’s head. A poet and English Instructor at Madison College, Jamie also enjoys thrifting and creating art with Josie.

About the Facilitator:

Jamie Steckelberg is a ten-year cancer survivor and Gilda’s Club member. She also was a caregiver for both parents Bob and Elma during their cancer journeys.

Cooking Class: Roasted Vegetable Soup Time 6:00 PM Location Virtual - assigned links

Thurs, March 19 @ 6pm Central

via Zoom

Description:

Join this online cooking class where Chef Michael Solovey will teach us an easy way to make a flavorful and nutritious roasted vegetable soup. You can follow along and cook during class, or just observe as a lecture.

What You'll Need:

  • - Ingredients & Prep: We'll add a recipe packet closer to the class date and will email a copy to all registered attendees.

Tai Chi: Evenings Time 7:00 PM Location Virtual - assigned links

Every Tuesday @ 7 pm via Zoom

A short (14 minute) practice to breathe, and move.

Baduanjin (Eight Pieces of Brocade or Eight Skilken Movements) is one of the most common forms of Tai Chi exercise that serves to improve human health. A complete Baduanjin includes eight separate exercises, each addressing a different physical area and qi meridian. In traditional Chinese Medicine, meridians support the flow of qi and other fundamental substances in the body.

Studies show that practicing Baduanjin regularly is beneficial for quality of life, sleep quality, balance, handgrip strength, trunk flexibility, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and resting heart rate.

Registration is required to receive the zoom link. Links and meeting info are sent to registrants the morning of the event.
