Location
Virtual - assigned links
Friday, March 29 @11am Central via Zoom
Description:
Join this online cooking class where Chef Michael Solovey will teach us how to make a delicious and high protein breakfast crumble. You can follow along and cook during class, or just observe as a lecture.
What You'll Need:
- - Ingredients & Prep: If you’ll be cooking this dish along with the chef during class: Read through the Recipe Packet (PDF),
purchase any ingredients you need, and complete the prep work before class begins.
About Chef Michael Solovey:
Chef Michael Solovey started cooking at a young age under the tutelage of his Mother, a refined,
self-taught culinarian. He would later graduate magna cum laude from Le Cordon Bleu at Scottsdale Culinary Institute before moving to Shanghai, China in 2008. Over the course of five years working in the food and beverage industry in Asia, Chef Michael
played various roles in opening 24 food and beverage establishments including his very own Eastern European inspired restaurant, Bloc.
In the past seven years, Michael has served as Resident Chef for Sur La Table and Chef/Cooking School Director for The Boelter Companies in Glendale, Wisconsin. He is now the owner of Sage Harvest Cooking School.
He has taught over 1,800 classes to over 10,000 students. His pedagogy implements approachable science to help his students understand why different cooking techniques render a variety of results in the kitchen; all for the sake of developing students'
culinary instinct. Although Chef Michael personally writes and curates all of the recipes used in his classes, his approach is decidedly anti-recipe as his aim is to empower everyone from the novice foodie to the seasoned industry professional to
take confident control of their diet, health, and wellness by cooking amazing food.

KnitKarma Club
March 13, March 27, April 10, April 24, May 8, and May 22
Knitting can decrease stress, increase self-esteem, and improve focus and memory. It is not about performance or perfection. Gilda's KnitKarma Club serves as a welcome opportunity to experience the health benefits of knitting while finding friendship
along the way. Bring your own project, or we have yarn, needles and ideas. All skill levels are welcome.
From our instructor Shari Porte "I began knitting in my 30's. Over the years, I have knitted many sweaters that are a bit oversized, scarves that are a tad too long, and gloves that are fingerless. I am an above average knitter but not a master knitter. Present day, I like to keep it simpler and knit straightforward scarves while I stream. I am looking forward to meeting up with other knitters, marveling at their choices of color and texture, and helping to rescue a dropped stitch or two :-)"

Everyday Adventures: Spring Wildflower Hike with Naturalist

Friday, April 19 @ 10:30am-12pm
Walking Iron County Park
6064 Beckman Rd Mazomanie, WI 53560
Join naturalist Eric Volden and Gilda's Club staff on a guided spring wildflower hike. We should see a variety of early spring ephemerals, including Pasqueflowers, Prairie Smoke, Dutchman's Breeches, and Hepatica. If we're lucky, we may even see migrating birds and early butterflies!
What are spring ephemerals? They are wildflowers that only appear for a brief window during the spring. It's their ephemeral nature that makes them extra special to see.
The trail at Walking Iron County Park is wide and flat. We'll have an optional additional trek onto a more narrow, uneven section of the trail. We'll hike approximately 1.5 miles depending on our pace and how much we see. Our naturalist hikes are slow with plenty of pauses so that we can take in all of the little details in nature.

Location
Gilda's Club, 7907 UW Health Ct., Middleton

Gilda's Club, 7907 UW Health Ct., Middleton

Using Books to Talk to Kids about Cancer
Time
6:00 PM
Location
Zoom
Research shows that one of the best ways for kids to process new information is to read them children's books. There are more and more books being published for kids of all ages about cancer, separation, big feelings, death and grief. In our work with families facing cancer, parents tell us
these books give them the words that are hard to find; illustrations normalize common experiences like hair loss and fatigue.
This presentation will delve into the many ways you can use books, beyond just reading them front to back, to help children make connections to their own family with cancer. Learn how to ask questions that will engage children in conversations. See simple,
creative art projects based on the books that will help your child to process their feelings. Hear about play and movement activities that will get you and your child connecting. See how far you can take these books!
Bright Spot Network provides free books about cancer, big feelings and grief to parents who have cancer and young children. Request your free books here!
Presenter:
Carissa Hodgson, LCSW, OSW-C is the Director of Programs and Community Outreach at Bright Spot Network,
which provides a program of support to parents with cancer who have young children. She has over 15 years of clinical and program experience working with families facing cancer. She has been co-chair of the Youth, Families and Cancer Special
Interest Group at the Association of Oncology Social Work since 2015.
Carissa is also a Long Term Lecturer at the Sandra Rosenbaum School of Social Work at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where she teaches courses on
grief and loss, as well as a generalist practice course with individuals, families and groups. She has a private psychotherapy and consultation practice where she specializes in cancer, chronic illness, caregiving, grief and loss, child and adolescent
development, family systems, and the queer community.

Location
Gilda's Club, 7907 UW Health Ct., Middleton

Write to Heal

Location
Zoom
Monthly on 2nd Sat @ 9am-10:30am CT via Zoom
Have you or someone you love experienced cancer? Do you sometimes feel overwhelmed with either your own health issues or another person's as their caregiver? Do you believe in the power of story and its healing ability? Narrative medicine can empower people to speak and write their truth. Through the experience of being vulnerable and sharing your own story, you may find a common bond with others.
Questions? Email program@gildasclubmadison.org
What You'll Need:
- Pens, pencils, or whatever writing tool you like
- Paper/journal
- Laptop/tablet if you prefer to type
About the Facilitator:
Jamie Steckelberg is a ten-year cancer survivor and Gilda’s Club member. She also was a caregiver for
both parents Bob and Elma during their cancer journeys. During chemotherapy while perusing the books at Gilda’s, she encountered a book entitled When Words Heal by Sharon Bray on how to create and facilitate writing groups using the Amherst Writer
and Artist method. Within months after chemo had ended, she became an Amherst Writer and Artist facilitator of Write to Heal, a writing group for cancer survivors and caregivers at Gilda’s Club in Middleton, WI. Her daughter Josie has been an integral
part of Jamie’s healing not only through shaving her own head but also by painting and pouring mud on her mother’s head. A poet and English Instructor at Madison College, Jamie also enjoys thrifting and creating art with Josie.
