Cooking Class: Poppy Seed Babka Time 6:00 PM Location Virtual - assigned links

Wednesday, June 1 @ 6pm CDT via Zoom

Description:

Join this online cooking class where Chef Michael Solovey will teach us how to make poppy seed babka. You can follow along and cook during class, or just observe as a lecture.

What You'll Need:

  • - Ingredients & Prep: If you’ll be cooking this dish along with the chef during class: Read through the Recipe Packet (PDF), purchase any ingredients you need, and complete the prep work before class begins.

About Chef Michael Solovey:

Chef Michael Solovey started cooking at a young age under the tutelage of his Mother, a refined, self-taught culinarian. He would later graduate magna cum laude from Le Cordon Bleu at Scottsdale Culinary Institute before moving to Shanghai, China in 2008. Over the course of five years working in the food and beverage industry in Asia, Chef Michael played various roles in opening 24 food and beverage establishments including his very own Eastern European inspired restaurant, Bloc.

In the past seven years, Michael has served as Resident Chef for Sur La Table and Chef/Cooking School Director for The Boelter Companies in Glendale, Wisconsin. He is now the owner of Sage Harvest Cooking School. He has taught over 1,700 classes to over 10,000 students. His pedagogy implements approachable science to help his students understand why different cooking techniques render a variety of results in the kitchen; all for the sake of developing students' culinary instinct. Although Chef Michael personally writes and curates all of the recipes used in his classes, his approach is decidedly anti-recipe as his aim is to empower everyone from the novice foodie to the seasoned industry professional to take confident control of their diet, health, and wellness by cooking amazing food.

Write to Heal Time 9:00 AM Location Zoom

Description:

Have you or someone you love experienced cancer? Do you sometimes feel overwhelmed with either your own health issues or another person's as their caregiver? Do you believe in the power of story and its healing ability? Narrative medicine can empower people to speak and write their truth. Through the experience of being vulnerable and sharing your own story, you may find a common bond with others.

What You'll Need:

  • Pens, pencils, or whatever writing tool you like
  • Paper/journal
  • Laptop/tablet if you prefer to type

About the Facilitator:

Jamie Steckelberg is a ten-year cancer survivor and Gilda’s Club member. She also was a caregiver for both parents Bob and Elma during their cancer journeys. During chemotherapy while perusing the books at Gilda’s, she encountered a book entitled When Words Heal by Sharon Bray on how to create and facilitate writing groups using the Amherst Writer and Artist method. Within months after chemo had ended, she became an Amherst Writer and Artist facilitator of Write to Heal, a writing group for cancer survivors and caregivers at Gilda’s Club in Middleton, WI. Her daughter Josie has been an integral part of Jamie’s healing not only through shaving her own head but also by painting and pouring mud on her mother’s head. A poet and English Instructor at Madison College, Jamie also enjoys thrifting and creating art with Josie.

Intimacy after Cancer Time 10:30 AM Location Zoom

Saturday, June 11 @ 10:30 am CDT via Zoom

Description:

Intimate connections are frequently impacted by cancer treatment and its aftermath. Join Ellen Bernard, MSW and owner of A Woman's Touch for this informative and connecting workshop. All adults are welcome to this conversation.

We will cover:

  • Physical and psychological effects of diagnosis and treatment.
  • Learn how diagnosis and treatment affects your body image and sexual wellness.
  • Understand the specific ways that your sexual health is impacted by chemo, radiation, surgery and being a cancer patient or being the partner of someone with cancer.
  • Explore non-pharmacologic solutions to the most common sexual function changes due to cancer treatment.
  • Learn about resources in the community to help you navigate this part of your life.

Learn how to:

  • Expand what pleasure means to you and how it can relieve pain.
  • Invite playfulness into learning new sexual practices and expanding your notions of what is commonly understood as sex.
  • Communicate with partners in new ways, to help you each/both get more of what you want.
  • Create new sexual experiences as your bodies change.

About Ellen Bernard, MSSW:

Ellen Barnard is an entrepreneur, long range planner and ASSECT certified Sex Educator. Ellen spent the first 15 years of her career supporting people with developmental disabilities, and helping them find a way to live in their (own) homes in their community. Her specialization was in finding ways to fill in the gaps so that un-met needs could be addressed.

She began this business this way: “In 1995, while I was trying to decide what I wanted to do next in life, I realized that the Midwest didn’t have a comfortable place for women to celebrate and explore our sexuality. Upon telling my grandmother this, she replied ’…well, get working on it, because I can’t wait to tell my friends that my grandaughter runs a sex store!’ Although my grandmother died a week before A Woman’s Touch opened, she always believed in me, and was proud of what I was doing. So, this store is for grandma Ruth, and all the great, feisty women like her.”

Ellen is interested in cooperative business ventures (networking again, is she?), and increasing the total quantity of pleasure in the world. She enjoys spending her free time cooking, playing with her Newfoundland dogs, and community organizing to make her neighborhood a better place for everyone to live.

Cooking Class: Chicken Satay with Peanut Sauce Time 11:00 AM Location Virtual - assigned links

Friday, June 24th @ 11am CDT via Zoom

Description:

Join this online cooking class where Chef Michael Solovey will teach us how to make chicken satay with peanut sauce and cucumber relish.

Thursday, July 7 @ 6pm CDT via Zoom

Description:

Join this online cooking class where Chef Michael Solovey will teach us how to make a black bean and mushroom burger, a turkey burger, and tangy remoulade.

Tai Chi Time 9:00 AM Location Zoom

Every Monday @ 9am - 9:30am via Zoom

A short (14 minute) practice to breathe, move start your day off.

Baduanjin (Eight Pieces of Brocade or Eight Skilken Movements) is one of the most common forms of Tai Chi exercise that serves to improve human health. A complete Baduanjin includes eight separate exercises, each addressing a different physical area and qi meridian. In traditional Chinese Medicine, meridians support the flow of qi and other fundamental substances in the body.

There are both standing and seated versions of Baduanjin in history, but the standing version is more popular among modern practitioners. Studies show that practicing Baduanjin regularly is beneficial for quality of life, sleep quality, balance, handgrip strength, trunk flexibility, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and resting heart rate.

Cooking Class: Shrimp Tacos with Edamame Succotash Time 11:00 AM Location Virtual - assigned links

Friday, August 5 @ 11am CDT via Zoom

Description:

Join this online cooking class where Chef Michael Solovey will teach us how to make shrimp tacos with edamame succotash.

Cooking Class: Cherry Tomato and Rosemary Focaccia Bread Time 6:00 PM Location Virtual - assigned links

Tuesday, August 16 @ 6pm CDT via Zoom

Description:

Join this online cooking class where Chef Michael Solovey will teach us how to make cherry tomato and rosemary focaccia bread.
