Art Journaling Time 2:00 PM Location Virtual - assigned links

Tuesday, September 1, 2020 @ 2pm-3pm CDT via Zoom

Description:

In this class we'll explore journaling with art. What does this mean? It can be as simple as documenting each day’s activities with art, doodling feelings, or creating pages that respond to the larger events of your life - cancer, COVID, family or friends, etc. It can be light, deep, sweet, funny, beautiful-the mission is to make a regular, creative practice of sharing and honoring yourself and your life.

We'll start with an exercise as we open up our minds and hearts, and warm up our hands for movement. Next we'll have prompts that you can visually answer with whatever materials you have in your spaces - collage, painting, drawing, stickers, etc.

This is an intentionally welcoming creative space, where there are no wrong answers, and any expression of creativity is wonderful.

What You'll Need:

  • - Bring whatever art materials or medium you have on hand. Paper and pen, paint, markers, or anything else you'd like to use.

About Mallory Shotwell:

Mallory Shotwell is an interdisciplinary artist and arts educator. In her art practice, she works with storytelling/interview, audio, photography, and video to share stories based on a theme. She majored in English at Aquinas College in Michigan, and later French and Elementary Education at Edgewood College in Madison. She worked as a public school teacher in Michigan and as a Montessori teacher in Madison. In her teaching practice, she utilizes multiple learning styles to serve and respect people's needs.

Guided Deep Relaxation Time 7:45 PM Location ZOOM

Tuesdays @ 7:45pm CDT for 20 min via Zoom**
August 11th, 18th, 25th & September 1st

**Register for each evening you plan to attend.

Description:

In this 20-minute experience, participants will explore guided, deep relaxation — a combination of progressive muscle relaxation through gentle movement coordinated with breath, and guided awareness and imagery. This practice is designed to support the body in releasing tension while suspending the mind of thought to bring the body and mind to a state of deep rest. Consciousness and awareness are still present, and at some point you may experience feeling like you are in between sleep and wakeful states.

This practice supports physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. Benefits may include: the ability to better self regulate stress and anxiety, manage depression, increase feelings of relaxation, improve sleep, manage side effects of medical treatments, and improve overall feelings of well being.

Before Our Time Together:

  • To experience the most benefit, please arrive early or on time.
  • Please minimize distractions like your cell phone or computer notifications.
  • Practices can be done sitting in a chair, lying down on the floor or in a bed. For your comfort, having a blanket or pillow to place under your head or knees, or over the body will optimize this experience.

About Amelia Coffaro:

Amelia Coffaro, C-IAYT, is a Certified Yoga Therapist in the infusion center at Ascension Columbia St. Mary’s Cancer Center, a member of the Yoga Committee for the Society for Integrative Oncology, and the Project Manager for the Bounce Back Study Stakeholder Group, a stress management program for adolescents and young adults cancer survivors led by Dr. Giselle Perez-Lougee, PhD at Harvard University. She is passionate about creating accessible, inclusive and holistic healing communities for young adults with cancer and chronic illness, and using mind body medicine to empower young people in their health and healing. Description:

Our weekly youth support groups are moving online! There are three different groups for kids and teens who have a parent or loved-one with cancer:

  • Ages 4-8 (Mondays, 4-5 pm)
  • Ages 9-12 (Wednesdays, 3-4 pm)
  • Ages 13-18 (Mondays, 7-8 pm)

We are keeping the good stuff (professional facilitator, engaging therapeutic art & games, relevant education about cancer and practical tools for coping) while making the groups more accessible to all families living in Wisconsin. Kids and teens will experience the valuable connection to peers who understand what they're going through, which is more important now than ever in our physically distanced world.

Art Journaling Time 2:00 PM Location Virtual - assigned links

Tuesday, September 15, 2020 @ 2pm-3pm CDT via Zoom

Each year we remember, honor, and celebrate members who have died from cancer. This year Gilda's Club will host the Remembrance Ceremony virtually. You and your guests are invited to attend this memorial ceremony where memories will be shared and cherished.

In years past we took rocks that represented our person, dedicated it to them by creatively writing their names, and placed them in our community space. This year we encourage you to take time in nature. Find a rock that represents your person, decorate it, bring it to the ceremony. Following our gathering we encourage you to find a memorial space in your home or yard to place the rock.

Cooking Class: Kitchen Basics / Creating a Pan Sauce Time 6:00 PM Location Virtual - assigned links

Thursday, October 15, 2020 @ 6pm CDT via Zoom

Description:

Join this online cooking class where Chef Michael Solovey will teach us how to make a basic pan sauce while walking us through his kitchen to shine some light on how a chef looks at their equipment as the means to achieve specific results. This is a great opportunity to ask questions. The menu will center around pan sauces - any protein is fair game. We'll begin with searing the protein, and continue with sautéing any aromatics, before we discuss deglazing the pan, and building the body of the sauce prior to reducing it to concentrate flavors and achieve a desired texture. You can follow along and cook during class, or just observe as a lecture.

What You'll Need:

  • - Ingredients & Prep: If you’ll be cooking this dish along with the chef during class: Read through the Recipe Packet (PDF), purchase any ingredients you need, and complete the prep work before class begins.

About Chef Michael Solovey:

Michael Solovey is a graduate of Le Cordon Bleu at Scottsdale Culinary Institute. Chef Michael refined his cooking skills while working at the famed Roy's Hawaiian Fusion restaurants before expanding his horizons eastward and moving to Shanghai, China where he was fortunate to work with numerous world class chefs and restaurateurs from around the world. He has been involved with the opening of 24 food and beverage establishments including his own restaurant, Bloc, where he featured foods inspired by his Slavic upbringing in Chicago. As resident chef of Sur La Table in Glendale, WI., Chef Michael taught over 1,400 cooking classes before bringing his culinary skills to the Boelter Superstore in January of 2019 where he now works as Chef and Cooking School Director.

A complete Baduanjin includes eight separate exercises, each addressing a different physical area and qi meridian. In traditional Chinese Medicine, meridians support the flow of qi and other fundamental substances in the body. There are both standing and seated versions of Baduanjin in history, but the standing version is more popular among modern practitioners. Art Journaling Time 2:00 PM Location Virtual - assigned links

Tuesday, October 27, 2020 @ 2pm-3pm CDT via Zoom

There are both standing and seated versions of Baduanjin in history, but the standing version is more popular among modern practitioners. Studies show that practicing Baduanjin regularly is beneficial for quality of life, sleep quality, balance, handgrip strength, trunk flexibility, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and resting heart rate. Art Journaling Time 2:00 PM Location Virtual - assigned links

Tuesday, November 24, 2020 @ 2pm-3pm CST via Zoom
