From our instructor Shari Porte "I began knitting in my 30's. Over the years, I have knitted many sweaters that are a bit oversized, scarves that are a tad too long, and gloves that are fingerless. I am an above average knitter but not a master knitter. Present day, I like to keep it simpler and knit straightforward scarves while I stream. I am looking forward to meeting up with other knitters, marveling at their choices of color and texture, and helping to rescue a dropped stitch or two :-)"

About the Facilitator:

Jamie Steckelberg is a ten-year cancer survivor and Gilda’s Club member. She also was a caregiver for both parents Bob and Elma during their cancer journeys. During chemotherapy while perusing the books at Gilda’s, she encountered a book entitled When Words Heal by Sharon Bray on how to create and facilitate writing groups using the Amherst Writer and Artist method. Within months after chemo had ended, she became an Amherst Writer and Artist facilitator of Write to Heal, a writing group for cancer survivors and caregivers at Gilda’s Club in Middleton, WI. Her daughter Josie has been an integral part of Jamie’s healing not only through shaving her own head but also by painting and pouring mud on her mother’s head. Cooking Class: Grilled Eggplant Baba Ghanoush Time 6:00 PM Location Virtual - assigned links

Weds, July 17 @ 6pm Central via Zoom

Description:

Join this online cooking class where Chef Michael Solovey will teach us how to make a grilled eggplant baba ghanoush. You can follow along and cook during class, or just observe as a lecture.

What You'll Need:

  • - Ingredients & Prep: If you’ll be cooking this dish along with the chef during class: Read through the Recipe Packet (PDF), purchase any ingredients you need, and complete the prep work before class begins.

About Chef Michael Solovey:

Chef Michael Solovey started cooking at a young age under the tutelage of his Mother, a refined, self-taught culinarian. He would later graduate magna cum laude from Le Cordon Bleu at Scottsdale Culinary Institute before moving to Shanghai, China in 2008. Over the course of five years working in the food and beverage industry in Asia, Chef Michael played various roles in opening 24 food and beverage establishments including his very own Eastern European inspired restaurant, Bloc.

In the past seven years, Michael has served as Resident Chef for Sur La Table and Chef/Cooking School Director for The Boelter Companies in Glendale, Wisconsin. He is now the owner of Sage Harvest Cooking School. He has taught over 1,800 classes to over 10,000 students. His pedagogy implements approachable science to help his students understand why different cooking techniques render a variety of results in the kitchen; all for the sake of developing students' culinary instinct. Although Chef Michael personally writes and curates all of the recipes used in his classes, his approach is decidedly anti-recipe as his aim is to empower everyone from the novice foodie to the seasoned industry professional to take confident control of their diet, health, and wellness by cooking amazing food.

ART: The Garden Without Strangers *PUBLIC Time 6:00 PM Location Gilda’s Club (7907 UW Health Court, Middleton, WI 53562)

The Garden Without Strangers

Monday, July 29 6 - 7:30 pm

IN PERSON @ Clubhouse

7907 UW Health Court, Middleton, WI 53562

Participate in a public art project through any of the following writing and art-making prompts!

Responses will be collected and shared with others as an accompaniment to a permanent sculpture that artist Lelia Byron is creating for the new UW Health Eastpark Medical Center in Madison, Wisconsin, which will specialize in adult cancer care and women's complex care.

Serving as a connecting point between the two wings of the building, the sculpture is a symbol of empathy among strangers who have shared, often difficult, experiences. In the sculpture, four colorful sculptural shapes that take inspiration from textile patterns together form a four-season garden that is active and vibrant even during a long winter.

Patients, staff, and visitors at the medical center will be able to walk around a path through The Garden Without Strangers or to look at the sculpture from inside all of the courtyard facing windows. Workshops will take place at Gilda's Club Madison (7907 UW Health Ct, Middleton, WI 53562) on July 29 (6-7:30 PM) and an August morning date to be set.

Responses to the prompts can be emailed to gardenwithoutstrangers@gmail.com

I am an above average knitter but not a master knitter. Present day, I like to keep it simpler and knit straightforward scarves while I stream. Cooking Class: Blueberry Chia Breakfast Pudding Time 11:00 AM Location Virtual - assigned links

Friday, August 9 @ 11am Central via Zoom

Description:

Join this online cooking class where Chef Michael Solovey will teach us how to make Blueberry Chia Breakfast Pudding.

Have you or someone you love experienced cancer? Do you sometimes feel overwhelmed with either your own health issues or another person's as their caregiver? Do you believe in the power of story and its healing ability? Narrative medicine can empower people to speak and write their truth. Through the experience of being vulnerable and sharing your own story, you may find a common bond with others.

Questions? Email program@gildasclubmadison.org

What You'll Need:

  • Pens, pencils, or whatever writing tool you like
  • Paper/journal
  • Laptop/tablet if you prefer to type

A poet and English Instructor at Madison College, Jamie also enjoys thrifting and creating art with Josie.

ART: The Garden Without Strangers *(PUBLIC) Time 10:00 AM Location Gilda's Club Madison (7907 UW Health Court, Middleton, WI 53562)

The Garden Without Strangers

Wednesday, Aug. 14 10 - 1:30

Knitting can decrease stress, increase self-esteem, and improve focus and memory. It is not about performance or perfection. Gilda's KnitKarma Club serves as a welcome opportunity to experience the health benefits of knitting while finding friendship along the way.

Bring your own project, or we have yarn, needles and ideas.  All skill levels are welcome.

Cooking Class: Beyond the Egg: Creative Egg Salad Creations Time 11:00 AM Location Virtual - assigned links

Friday, August 23 @ 11am Central via Zoom

Description:

Join this online cooking class where Chef Michael Solovey will teach us how to make two types of egg salad—avocado egg salad, and a plant-based egg salad (using tofu instead of eggs). These versatile dishes can be made into sandwiches, wraps, and many other forms!

Baduanjin (Eight Pieces of Brocade or Eight Skilken Movements) is one of the most common forms of Tai Chi exercise that serves to improve human health. A complete Baduanjin includes eight separate exercises, each addressing a different physical area and qi meridian. In traditional Chinese Medicine, meridians support the flow of qi and other fundamental substances in the body.

There are both standing and seated versions of Baduanjin in history, but the standing version is more popular among modern practitioners. Studies show that practicing Baduanjin regularly is beneficial for quality of life, sleep quality, balance, handgrip strength, trunk flexibility, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and resting heart rate.

Cooking Class: Sesame Crusted Ahi Tuna Sandwich with Citrus Aioli Time 11:00 AM Location Virtual - assigned links

Friday, September 20 @ 11am Central via Zoom

Description:

Join this online cooking class where Chef Michael Solovey will teach us how to make Sesame Crusted Ahi Tuna Sandwich with Citrus Aioli, Avocado, and Arugula. You can follow along and cook during class, or just observe as a lecture.

What You'll Need:

  • - Ingredients & Prep: We'll add a recipe packet closer to the class date and will email a copy to all registered attendees.

  • Session 1: Get Back to Wellness: Take Control of Your Survivorship
  • Session 2: Emotional Health
  • Session 3: Eating Well and Staying Active
  • Session 4: Medical Management Beyond Cancer: What You Need to Know

Knitting can decrease stress, increase self-esteem, and improve focus and memory. It is not about performance or perfection. Gilda's KnitKarma Club serves as a welcome opportunity to experience the health benefits of knitting while finding friendship along the way.

Bring your own project, or we have yarn, needles and ideas.  All skill levels are welcome.
