WBCC's Beyond the Pink Ribbon Training (PUBLIC) Time 6:00 PM Location HYBRID - Zoom and Gilda's Club Community Room Dr. Kari Cataldo will lead the Beyond the Pink Ribbon® Advocacy Training, focused on how to engage with your state and US senators and representatives to ask for their support of bills related to breast cancer and women’s health. Gail’s Law was recently introduced in the Wisconsin state legislature, and advocates sharing their personal stories and explaining the importance of the bill will help to get it passed. This bill will ensure cost free coverage of medically necessary supplemental screenings and diagnostic tests (like MRI, ultrasound, etc.) for women who have a suspicious finding or are at high risk for breast cancer due to dense breast tissue, personal medical history or family history/genetics. Also, this training will briefly cover how to express your support for our federal legislative priorities, including Medicaid (Breast and Cervical Cancer Treatment Act), Medicare (Metastatic Breast Cancer Access to Care Act), and Research (Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program). Registration is open to anyone interested in advocacy, and there is no obligation or future time commitment. It will simply give you the tools to be more effective when calling, writing, or meeting your senators and representatives. There will be a 40-minute presentation, followed by questions and answers. We hope to see you there! https://www.wibreastcancer.org/ Info & Registration

About the Facilitator:

Jamie Steckelberg is a ten-year cancer survivor and Gilda’s Club member. She also was a caregiver for both parents Bob and Elma during their cancer journeys. During chemotherapy while perusing the books at Gilda’s, she encountered a book entitled When Words Heal by Sharon Bray on how to create and facilitate writing groups using the Amherst Writer and Artist method. Within months after chemo had ended, she became an Amherst Writer and Artist facilitator of Write to Heal, a writing group for cancer survivors and caregivers at Gilda’s Club in Middleton, WI. Her daughter Josie has been an integral part of Jamie’s healing not only through shaving her own head but also by painting and pouring mud on her mother’s head. Knitting can decrease stress, increase self-esteem, and improve focus and memory. It is not about performance or perfection. Gilda's Knit Karma Club serves as a welcome opportunity to experience the health benefits of knitting while finding friendship along the way.

All fiber artists are welcome!  Crochet, embroidery, slow stitching, you name it!

Snag a beverage, perhaps a snack and join us.

Bring your own project, or we have yarn, needles and ideas.  All skill levels are welcome.

From our instructor Shari Porte "I began knitting in my 30's. Over the years, I have knitted many sweaters that are a bit oversized, scarves that are a tad too long, and gloves that are fingerless. I am an above average knitter but not a master knitter. Present day, I like to keep it simpler and knit straightforward scarves while I stream. I am looking forward to meeting up with other knitters, marveling at their choices of color and texture, and helping to rescue a dropped stitch or two :-)"

Have you or someone you love experienced cancer? Do you sometimes feel overwhelmed with either your own health issues or another person's as their caregiver? Do you believe in the power of story and its healing ability? Narrative medicine can empower people to speak and write their truth. Through the experience of being vulnerable and sharing your own story, you may find a common bond with others.

Questions? Email program@gildasclubmadison.org

What You'll Need:

  • Pens, pencils, or whatever writing tool you like
  • Paper/journal

A poet and English Instructor at Madison College, Jamie also enjoys thrifting and creating art with Josie.
